Our guest today points out that energy efficiency is actually employing MILLIONS MORE than Renewable Energy as a sector!
Paula Glover, President of the Alliance to Save Energy, is fighting on the front lines to reduce energy waste. She uses her platform to champion energy efficiency as a cost-saving measure and a fundamental principle for achieving energy justice and economic growth. Paula believes that the "first fuel" is non-consumption.
Paula’s a returning guest to the show (Ep 333) but it’s our first time digging into her career evolution and role in championing Energy Efficiency.
Expect to learn:
How many people the energy efficiency sector employs (hint: it's way more than you think)Why energy efficiency is foundational to achieving broader economic and environmental goalsPaula and the Alliance to Save Energy's strategies to educate the younger generation about energy efficiency An unlikely ally to black industry leadership that led to a best-selling book Why Paula thinks diversity, justice, equity and inclusion have been sidelined as a conversation.

Today’s consumers are increasingly aware of the issues around energy efficiency, as well as the impact of their footprint on the planet. Dr Phyllis Yoshida, Senior Fellow for Energy and Technology at the Sasakawa Peace Foundation USA, looks at how the energy efficiency conversation is moving on and what is needed to help the world commit to making sustainable choices in the long-term. While prices are coming down for renewable energies, Phyllis argues that incentives from governments, regulators and consumers will still be required in developing markets if utility companies are going to make the cultural shift towards clean energy, at the same time as remaining profitable. Are we underestimating the potential of increased efficiency? It wouldn’t be the first time.
In 2021, the International Energy Agency and the U.S. Energy Information Administration forecasted a 50% increase in global energy demand by 2050. Such forecasts have echoes of the 1970’s, when – in the middle of a global energy crisis – forecasters were anticipating as much as a 300% increase in energy demand over the next 3 decades. Those forecasters missed the mark by about 250%, because they didn’t count on the significant efficiency improvements in home appliances, vehicle fuel economy, industry and home energy demands that kickstarted in the 1980’s.
In this episode, featuring Dr. Amory Lovins of RMI and Dr. Roger Aines of Lawrence Livermore National Lab (LLNL), we explore whether energy forecasters are missing the mark again: projecting only incremental efficiency gains in the next 30 years, despite the fact that we already have the technologies and smart design approaches that would allow global energy demand to decrease by more than 70%, while still providing the same services of today.
Joined by a group of LLNL scientists, Amory, Roger and host James Lawler discuss the potential of smart and integrative design approaches that can provide savings in both energy emissions and costs, as well as the obstacles that are keeping us from taking full advantage of these approaches. The U.S. Department of Energy's Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) is the nation's largest residential energy efficiency program, helping low-income families to lower their energy bills. KHC receives funding for WAP through the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services' Low Income Heating Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). That funding allows trained inspectors and crews from Community Action Agencies across the Commonwealth to retrofit housing for eligible individuals at no cost to the homeowner. Before doing the work, though, crew members are trained by experts at the KHC's Residential Energy Efficiency (REE) Center in Frankfort, Kentucky, where they learn on state-of-the-art equipment and training tools.
In this episode, we talk with those experts—REE Manager Mark Adams and REE Training Specialists Dewayne Cade and Troy Gosser—to learn more about weatherization, the REE Center, and the future of the program.
